Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, his prayer to his God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the Lord God of Israel, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Israel. – 2 Chron. 33:18

Every great king of Israel and Judah had one thing in common: they valued the word of the Lord. They feared the word of the Lord. They had a reverence and respect for the word of the Lord that caused them to tremble and respond when God spoke. The bad kings ignored God’s word! But the good ones heeded it.

Manasseh lived an amazing life. He became king of Judah at age twelve (v 1) and at first he “did evil in the sight of the Lord” (v 2). Babylon overran Judah and Manasseh was taken away into captivity “with hooks” and “bronze fetters” (v 11). But Manasseh cried out to God in that place:

Now when he was in affliction, he implored the Lord his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers… – 2 Chron. 33:12

And when this formerly wicked king changed his heart, humbled himself, and cried out to God, God responded.

…and prayed to Him; and He received his entreaty, heard his supplication, and brought him back to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord was God. – 2 Chron. 33:13

Come back to the word of God. Humble yourself and return to Him! There is a reason God gave us His word. God’s word ensures that we will focus on God and rekindle our love for Him, instead of being distracted by idols. And God’s promise is that when we keep our eyes on His word, everything we do will prosper:

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. – Josh. 1:8

Prayer:

God, I love Your word! Help me to fall in love with Your word like never before. Help me to revere and respect Your word more than ever before! I know that as long as I keep my eyes on Your word, I cannot fail, in Jesus’ name!
