Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. – 1 Cor 3:16-17
God’s Holy Spirit made a home in you the moment you gave your life to Jesus Christ. Our Scripture today is a parallel verse to 1 Cor 6:19: “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?”
The fact that God’s Holy Spirit lives inside us has two major implications. First, God will defend you. 1 Cor 3:16 promises that if anyone defiles you (desecrates, sullies or profanes you), He will destroy him. If God is your Defender, you do not have to defend yourself. Your efforts are much better used to promote the Gospel instead of defending yourself.
Second, you are holy. Think about the most beautiful church sanctuary you have ever seen. Imagine the stained glass windows, the sparkling veneer on the pews, and the glorious reflection on the floor of everything built above ground. Now let this truth sink in: You are more beautiful to God than that sanctuary. God calls you worthy to carry His presence! Even the most pristine temple will eventually fall into ruin, and be crushed under the weight of time; yet God has chosen you as a permanent reflections of heaven’s beauty!
You are God’s temple. God will not let anything defile you unless you fail to invite Him in. He will defend you from all adversaries as long as you permit Him to do so. He calls you beautiful & holy with every breath; and He longs for the day when you will see yourself as He sees you!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for choosing me. I recognize that, without Jesus, I have no right to experience Your presence. I have no personal qualifications that should permit me to be filled with Your Holy Spirit. Yet You call me perfect. You call me worthy. You call me beautiful, forever and ever. Amen.
