Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And they said to me, “The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.” So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. – Neh 1:3-4
Nehemiah was in Persia; but when he heard about God’s people in Jersualem, he was heartbroken. He wasn’t there! His own life wasn’t in danger. His own livelihood wasn’t at stake! But he stopped what he was doing, and he “sat down and wept.” He “mourned for many days.” He fasted and prayed before the God of heaven!
When you hear about someone else’s suffering, do you stop what you’re doing and pray in that moment? Do you ask the Lord to bless them, right then and there? Do you sit down and weep? Do you mourn for many days? Do you fast and pray for that person, as if their life was your own?
You’ve prayed for your own breakthrough. Now it’s time to pray for someone else. Pray for them as if their prayer request was your own, and believe for breakthrough on their behalf!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for reminding me to pray for others. Help me to take my eyes off myself, and put them on the needs of other people. I want to help others with my prayers, instead of always praying for myself, in Jesus’ name!
