Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. – 1 Cor. 8:1
Knowledge puffs up. It makes you proud! But love edifies: it keeps you humble while lifting others up in your place. Won’t you make it your goal today to love other people well? All the knowledge in the world does no good unless you use it to love others!
When you get to Heaven, God will not be interested in how much knowledge you accumulated. All He will want to know is: 1) did you love Jesus and 2) did you love others?
Knowledge is a good thing. But love is better. You don’t have to know everything! You just have to love on everything that moves. Focus on loving other people well, and God will fill you with the wisdom and knowledge you need to do it well.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. – 1 Cor. 13:1
Prayer:
Lord, help me to love other people well! I want to know the deep mysteries of God. But I want to know them so it will make me better at loving others, not just better at knowing stuff! Love is the goal. Help me to get there, in Jesus’ name.
