Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

If the ax is dull, and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but wisdom brings success. – Eccl 10:10

Work smarter, not harder. A sharp ax cuts down on the strength we have to apply to the task at hand. The way we “sharpen our ax” is by spending time around like-minded people!

As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. – Prov 27:17

Bouncing thoughts and ideas off of Spirit-filled friends will save us trouble and headache in the end. Seeking wise counsel will cut down on the mental gymnastics we have to perform to arrive at any decision.

If we forsake community, it means we must do everything in and of our own strength. God’s ambition is that we would have the wisdom to live life from a place of community! Find a good church, and make some friends. Your church family will prove to be essential, just when you need it the most.

Prayer:

Father, I ask that You would plant me in a good community of like-minded followers of Christ! I know I need to be surrounded by other believers: for my own good, and for theirs. Help me never to think I’m too smart – or too busy – to need community.
