Dead flies putrefy the perfumer’s ointment, and cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor. – Eccl. 10:1
You are anointed! God’s hand is on you to do something on this earth that no one else can do. But Satan’s goal is to spoil the anointing on your life. “Dead flies” spoil the anointing. What is a “dead fly?”
“Dead flies” are the sinful tendencies in your life that the enemy is using to try and distract you from your time with God! In Luke 11:15, onlookers accused Jesus of casting out demons by “Beelzebub.” Beelzebub is a derivation of Baalzebub, the name of a Philistine deity worshipped at Ekron in 2 Kings 1. Baalzebub can be translated as “Lord of the fly” (Strong’s H1176). So when Scripture talks about dead flies in the ointment, it speaks to Satan’s desire to corrupt everything good and holy in your life, and to sap you of your God-given power and potential by spoiling the anointing on your life through sinful distractions!
So how do you keep the dead flies out of the ointment? Protect it. Cover it! Guard it with your life and make sure nothing gets in it. Protect your time with the Lord! Make spending time in His Word your most urgent priority every day. And as you do, God’s hand will be on you for powerful ministry like never before, in Jesus’ name.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for anointing me! I recognize that I have a responsibility to protect the anointing on my life. Show me how to prize and cherish time with You! Keep me insulated from distraction and sin. I want to love You and experience Your presence like never before, in Jesus’ name!
