Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Therefore show to them, and before the churches the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf. – 2 Cor 8:24
It’s one thing to tell someone you love them; but it’s another thing altogether to show them. When a religious leader asked Jesus, “Which is the greatest commandment…” (Matt 22:36), Jesus replied: “You shall love the Lord your God…” (v 37). “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (v 39). Our primary responsibility as Christians is to love! We must love God, and we must love others. But do you have “proof of your love” (2 Cor 8:24, above)?
Love looks like something. Don’t just tell God you love Him; show Him. Lay down your life to serve Him. Make prayer the first thing you do in the morning as a demonstration that talking with God is your first priority! Get rid of anything and everything in your life that interferes with your relationship with God!
And don’t just tell other people you love them; show them! Be generous. When you go out to lunch with someone, pay! When you get together and talk with someone, listen. Empty talk is worthless; but talk with action is proof of your love.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. – James 2:18
Prayer:
Father, I love You! And I want to prove it. I love other people! And I want to prove that too. Make me one who lives out my life with an active demonstration of love: first for You, and then for others, in Jesus’ name!
