Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
I opened for my beloved, but my beloved had turned away and was gone. My heart leaped up when he spoke. I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer. – Song of Solomon 5:6

The Beloved came to be with the Shulamite woman in the middle of the night. He knocked, saying, “Open for me, my sister, my love…” (v. 2)! But instead of opening, the Shulamite woman made a mental catalogue of all the reasons she shouldn’t open.

I have taken off my robe;
How can I put it on again?
I have washed my feet;
How can I defile them? – v. 3

She was ready for bed! Her lover showed up past visiting hours when it was inconvenient. And guess what? God will do the same thing in your life! He will come to you when it is inconvenient, just to see if you respond. He will come when you’re busy, just to see if you care enough to answer.

When Jesus knocks, do you open? When He wants to talk, do you make time to listen? The unfortunate result of the Shulamite’s delay was that her lover left. She opened when she was good and ready instead of rushing to open when he called; and by the time she got around to opening, he was gone.

Jesus wants to talk with you today. He wants to spend time with you in prayer! He is knocking. Will you open?

Prayer:

Father, help me to make time for Jesus! I pray my heart would burn with passion for Him. All I want is to hear from Him and be with Him! I pray that I would never be constrained by convenience, but that I would seek encounters with you all day long in Jesus’ name.
