Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. – Gal. 6:1
How you restore others is important. Scripture doesn’t say “you who are wise restore…” or “you who have a Master’s degree in counseling restore…” It says “you who are spiritual restore…” Restoration is a spiritual act, not an emotional one! Because true, lasting change relies on the powerful work of the Holy Spirit, and not our own human effort in the flesh.
Giving advice often backfires (see Job’s friends). Counseling sometimes helps (I have a Master’s degree in clinical counseling and I believe in the field)! But what inspires change most of all is a relationship with the Holy Spirit. True restoration happens when you understand that you cannot restore yourself! Jesus, through the power of His Spirit working in you, must restore you. Invite His Holy Spirit into your life, and He will restore in a moment what you could never piece back together in years.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for restoration! Thank You for making all things new. I receive Your resurrection life, in Jesus’ name! Holy Spirit, I invite You to come and move through me like never before. I am a restorer by the power of Your Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name!
