Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Return, O backsliding children,” says the Lord; “for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.” – Jer. 3:14-15

We all want good leaders. We want to follow people who inspire us! We want to be led by people who set a good example. When we don’t have that type of leader in our life, we blame someone else. God, why can’t my boss be a better leader? Why can’t my pastor be more sensitive? Why can’t my president show more compassion?

But good leadership starts with you. Your “returning” (v. 14) is the precursor to good leaders coming into your life (v. 15). When you return to God, “shepherds according to His heart” will multiply in your life! Shepherds filled with genuine humility are part of God’s promise of restoration in your life. The more you return to Him, the more He will purify and sanctify your leaders.

Believe it or not, it all starts with you. Are you looking to your leaders and wishing they would lead better? Pray like never before. Seek God like never before! As you “return” to God and pray for your leaders, your leaders will adopt God’s heart. As your heart returns to God, His heart in them will grow! Change – even for your leaders – starts with you.

Prayer:

Father, I pray You would multiply the number of strong, Spirit-filled leaders I have in my life. I recognize that in order to see that come to pass, I have a responsibility to pray. I have a responsibility to turn to You with my whole heart! Give me the strength and the wisdom to do my part, in Jesus’ name.
