Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran. I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in My counsel, and had caused My people to hear My words, then they would have turned them from their evil way And from the evil of their doings. – Jer 23:21-22
God’s prophets had a problem. He didn’t send them anywhere; yet they traveled in His name. He didn’t tell them to say anything; yet they prophesied in His name. God wanted to use them to turn His people from their sin: to invite them to repent and be received into the Kingdom of God! But His prophets were more interested in being busy than being obedient.
If God has given you something to say, say it. But if He has not spoken to you, don’t say anything! I believe in the gift of prophecy (see 1 Cor 12:10). What’s more, I believe all New Testament believers are called to exercise the gift of prophecy (see Luke 7:28, 1 Cor 14:1), because all are filled with the Holy Spirit (see Rom 8:11). However, the fact that we are called to prophesy does not mean we can say whatever we want! The counterbalance to desiring the prophetic is an understanding that we are accountable for the words we give in God’s name:
But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Matt 12:36-37
God will speak through you; but you have to wait on Him for the message. When you feel like God wants you to say something, ask Him for confirmation. Spend some more time in prayer, and let Him confirm His word. Once you’re sure it’s Him, deliver the message. The result will be an on time word that changes someone’s life.
Prayer:
Father, I pray You would increase my prophetic accuracy in Jesus’ name! I know the words I speak are valuable. I don’t want to waste my breath, saying things You don’t want me to say! Purify my heart, and purify my mouth, in Jesus’ name.
