Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“Surely the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not obeyed Me” (Jer 35:16).  The Rechabites proved it was possible to adhere to commandments from a man. Yet the Israelites, who had received commandments not only from man but directly from God, found it impossible to adhere to commandments. Under the context of the New Covenant, we are free from the curse of being unable to live up to God’s expectations for us. Jesus Christ came to fulfill the law on our behalf. He came, perfect in every way, so that God would accept our imperfection when we rely on Him. What’s more, God deposited His Holy Spirit in each and every single person who calls on the name Jesus. No longer are we given a list of impossible standards and asked to uphold them; we are given the free gift of salvation when we rely on the Cross.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the gift of the Cross. Thank You for the gift of Your Son Jesus Christ. Help me to rest in His finished work. You demanded perfection, and He Is.
