Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid…” – Jer 38:19

Jerusalem was surrounded. The Babylonian army was ready to attack the city from every side! Jeremiah gave King Zedekiah one last warning: surrender! “If you surely surrender to the king of Babylon’s princes,” Jeremiah said, “then your soul shall live; this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live (v 17).”

But Zedekiah wouldn’t listen. He was paralyzed by fear. So, instead of obeying the voice of the Lord, Zedekiah held out and hoped for victory. Instead of listening to God and doing what He said, Zedekiah bowed to his fears and stubbornly refused to obey God’s command. The result was catastrophic: Jerusalem was completely destroyed.

Do not let fear keep you from obedience. God is trustworthy. Embracing the inevitable uncertainty that comes with following the Lord’s every command is far better than ignoring His voice and vainly hoping for the best. God gave you His word on purpose: so that, through obedience, you might be saved!

Prayer:

Father, help me to be obedient! I am no longer afraid to trust You with all my heart! I want to do everything You tell me to do: with a full heart, and a smile on my face, in Jesus’ name!
