Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
…when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. – 2 Tim. 1:5

Paul thanked God (v 3) for Timothy’s “genuine faith.” “Genuine” is the Greek anupokritos (Strong’s G505), which means unfeigned (real and not faked!), undisguised and sincere. Timothy had incredible faith! Faith that did not waver. Faith that caused him to practice what he preached! But where did Timothy get his faith? It “dwelt first” in Timothy’s family members: more specifically, it came from generations of women who came before him.

Your faith comes from someone. Before you gave your life to Jesus, someone was praying for you! And now their faith is in you. Jesus is in heaven making intercession for you right now.[1] And now His faith is in you.

Now maybe you didn’t come from a Christian home or a Christian family where your mom and her mom were praying for you. But regardless of your upbringing, you have an incredible opportunity before you. You can start a legacy of faith. You can be the first in your bloodline to give your life fully and completely to Jesus! To take Him at His word, to do what He calls you to do, and to be whom He created you to be. As you do, not only will your life be completely transformed; but you will leave a heritage of faith that will be passed down for generations to come.

Prayer:

Father, fill me with faith! Fill me with faith for the impossible. Fill me with faith for the miraculous! I may be the first in my bloodline to lay down my life for Jesus; but I will not be the last, in Jesus’ name.
