Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient…. – 2 Tim 2:24
“A servant of the Lord must…be gentle.” If you want to serve Jesus, you must be gentle! Would people describe you as “gentle?” We live in a world where firmness is prized. Stand up for yourself! Don’t back down! Make sure they know whom they’re dealing with!
But Jesus calls us to be “gentle to all!” Gentleness and patience are directly linked to your ability to teach (i.e. share the Gospel). If you are not gentle, people will not listen to what you have to say; and if people won’t listen to you, it will be impossible to lead anyone to Jesus!
Be gentle. Your effectiveness depends on it!
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. – Gal 5:22-23
Prayer:
Father, I want to lead people to Jesus. Soften my tough exterior. Remind me to let people in and focus on relationship! Make me gentle, in Jesus’ name.
