Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men. – Titus 3:8

If you fail to do “maintain good works,” is your salvation in question? Absolutely not. Salvation comes first, and good works follow. You are saved, “…not by the works…which [you] have done, but according to His mercy” (v 5). Salvation is a gift; we cannot earn it!

We do good works, then, not to be saved – but so that others might be saved. You are saved by grace, through faith – and not of works. As long as you believe in Jesus, your salvation is secure! But the people around you need to see the goodness of God so they want salvation too!

Prayer:

Father, help me to maintain good works! I am so thankful for the gift of salvation which You have given me. Help me to love You with all my heart, in Jesus’ name.
