Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“In that He says, ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away” (Heb 8:13). Obsolescence is “…the state of being which occurs when an object, service, or practice is no longer wanted even though it may still be in good working order” (Wikipedia). The law still works: if you want to try and earn righteousness by being perfect, be my guest. But let me save you some time: the law is impossible to fulfill unless you’re perfect, because even if you keep the whole law but make one mistake, you are guilty of all (James 2:10). The old covenant is no longer new. Jesus Christ came and fulfilled the old covenant so that we could enjoy perfect freedom through Him under God’s new covenant. The purpose of the law is to prove your need for a Savior. Embrace Jesus Christ and watch your need for perfection vanish away!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for fulfilling the Old Covenant! Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus Christ to die for me. I can never repay You, and I can never earn my righteousness. Thank You.
