Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance… – Heb. 9:7
Under the Old Covenant, the tabernacle was divided into two parts: the holy place and the “Most Holy” place (Ex. 26:33). The holy place was a space for ritual service to God: “the lampstand, the table, and the showbread” (v 2) were all there. But the Most Holy place was a place for meeting with God. It was a location where intimacy with God could be established: where He met with you face to face!
But access to the Most Holy place was restricted. The only person allowed into the presence of God was the high priest, who “went alone once a year.” Once per year! Can you imagine only having access to God once per year? Only being allowed in His presence once per year? Only being able to hear His voice once per year? But under our New Covenant with God through Jesus Christ, we are offered constant and continuous access to God:
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Heb. 4:16
There is no longer a limit on the number of encounters you get to have with God! You can enter His presence any time you choose, and you can stay for as long as you like! And you can know – in advance – exactly what you will find when you kneel at His feet: mercy and grace, free of judgment and fear. So knowing what you know, why wouldn’t you stay in His presence all day every day?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for giving me unlimited and irrevocable access to Your presence! I am so grateful that You called my name and called me in. I am going to spend all day every day in Your presence, in Jesus’ name!
