Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command. – Heb. 11:23
Moses lived an amazing life. He gave up his position in Pharaoh’s house because he would rather be with God’s people than in the palace. He was called by God to lead Israel out of Egypt, and went and demanded that Pharaoh let God’s people go. He called ten plagues into existence at God’s instruction! He initiated the Passover, which we still celebrate today. He “passed through the Red Sea as by dry land” (v 29), fully trusting God to deliver His people from their oppressors.
But Moses’ journey didn’t start with Moses. It started with his parents! His parents “saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.” Moses’ parents risked their very lives by defying Pharaoh’s edict to give up every firstborn male. They knew God would do something powerful with their son! And they risked everything to make sure he had an opportunity to live and serve God.
Parents: your faith will pave the way for generations to come. Your role as a protector of your children is incredibly significant. It matters! It is worthy of your time and attention. Moses said no to Pharaoh because it was in his blood. The decisions we make today, and the faith we display in life’s toughest moments, will cause the next generation to stand on our shoulders and do things of which we could only dream.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the grace to model great faith to the next generation! Give me strength to steward my children well. Give me wisdom to encourage the younger men and women You send to me! I know the next generation starts with me, in Jesus’ name.
