Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. – Heb. 11:30

God asked His people to do something absolutely outlandish when they got to the edge of Jericho at the border of the Promised Land:

“It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.” – Joshua 6:5

God told His people to march around the city six days in a row. They were not to attack! They would just march in silence. But on the seventh day, they would “blow the trumpets” (Joshua 6:4); and as they did, the walls of the great city of Jericho would fall flat. God’s people would be free to walk in at their own pace and collect the spoils.

But Hebrews 11:30 explains an important concept. It wasn’t the sound of the trumpet that brought the walls of Jericho down! It was the faith behind the act of sounding the trumpet. Faith-filled obedience gets the job done! You not only have to do what God says – following His plan instead of your own! – but you have to have faith that His plan will work.

What is God asking you to do that seems impossible? Don’t just go through the motions. Step out and believe that God’s plan is the best plan. Devote yourself to His plan wholeheartedly! Choose to believe that doing what God says will result in your prosperity and success. Without faith, obedience means nothing! But with faith, obedience can open every door.

For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. – Heb. 4:2

Prayer:

Father, increase my faith! Lord, thank You for speaking to me about next steps: for telling me what to do and when to do it. I pray that I would never do anything without faith. Help me to believe that everything I do in service to You will bear fruit when it is mixed with faith, in Jesus’ name!
