CityLight Pastor Commentary:
Israel’s exodus from Egypt teaches us a lot about faith. Israel ‘went out’ with boldness (v 8), but became ‘very afraid’ as soon as they were in danger (v 10)! If we say we trust God in the calm, when we are fully provided for, and when we lack nothing, do we know we really trust Him? It’s so easy to ‘go out’ of a comfortable place when God calls us out, but it’s so hard to stay in that uncomfortable place and let Him fight for us. We only prove we truly trust in God when we find ourselves in situations from which we can’t deliver ourselves. We only prove we will fully rely on Him when we find ourselves in need of a Deliverer. Faith and trust are developed, refined and purified in times of trial; it’s for that reason James (1:2) told us to count persecution as joy!
Prayer:
“Father, help me to completely rely on You in times of trouble. When it looks like there’s no way out, I will be faithful because You are the Only Way!”
