Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; Try my mind and my heart. – Ps 26:2
Here we see the key to David’s transparent, joyful, and completely honest relationship with God. David didn’t try to hide anything from God; instead, he invited Him in! “Examine me,” David pleads. “Prove me,” he contends. “Try me,” he begs!
To “examine” means to legally determine if someone is worthy of a verdict (Strong’s #974). David invited God to scrutinize the evidence and determine if he was really living his life for God. To “prove” means to put to the test (Strong’s #5254). David invited God to test him, and see if he really practiced what he preached! To “try” means to smelt or refine: to remove impurities, much as a goldsmith burns the dross off the precious metal he is watching over (Strong’s #6884). David invited God to refine him and remove any impurities, so that God could have his whole heart!
The key to genuine intimacy with God is inviting Him into your whole heart – hiding nothing, and letting your guard down completely. Ask God to examine you: every thought, and every intention. Ask God to prove you: to invite you to put your faith into practice. Ask Him to try you: to refine your mind and heart until you have the mind of Christ, and you are moved with compassion just as Jesus was!
If you want to be more like Him, you have to invite Him in.
Prayer:
Lord, I give You my whole heart. I don’t want to hold one single thing back from You. Take all of me, and make me more like You, in Jesus’ name!
