Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. – James 1:23-24
Faith is like a muscle: it must be exercised. If you don’t exercise your faith, it will atrophy. If, however, you flex your faith muscle and believe, your faith will grow big and strong!
James’ exhortation is a call to action for the contemporary church. We have become hearers of the word. We come to church on Sunday and hear testimonies about what is possible. We read our Bibles and hear testimonies about miraculous things God has done for His people. But when it comes to actually expecting God will do supernatural things in our daily lives, we can’t bring ourselves to believe. We have forgotten what kind of church we are supposed to be, as demonstrated in the Book of Acts. We have forgotten what kind of people God created us to be!
If you don’t exercise your faith, you will forget the goodness and power of God. If you don’t pray for supernatural things, you won’t see results that remind you that God can do anything! Put your faith into practice. Stand on God’s word, and pray for the impossible. You will not be disappointed.
Prayer:
Father, give me faith for the impossible. Help me to exercise my faith. I want to be a doer of the word, because just hearing is not enough!
