Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath… – Jas 1:19
Wise men and women are “swift to hear” and “slow to speak.” The more you listen, the more the quality of your relationships improves. Good romantic relationships are ones in which each partner knows how to listen. Good friendships are those in which each party finds it more important to hear what the other person is saying, than to speak one’s own mind.
The same is true of your relationship with God! How much of your prayer time do you spend talking versus listening? How often do you ask God to speak to you, and then continue to fill any empty space with words? Have open ears and closed lips. Listen first, and speak later!
Prayer:
Father, help me to listen more and talk less. You have given me ears to hear. Help me to open them and listen for Your voice, in Jesus’ name!
