Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Then Daniel answered, and said before the king, “Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.” – Dan 5:17

The King of Babylon saw a vision from God and he needed an interpretation; so he called Daniel. The king knew Daniel was skilled in interpreting the word of the Lord, so he offered to pay Daniel for his services. But Daniel refused!

Daniel didn’t interpret the dream for King Belshazzar; he interpreted it so the whole kingdom of Babylon would come to know God! Daniel immediately rejected any earthly reward he was offered to exercise his God-given gifting. He knew the interpretation belonged to God anyway, so he refused to take any form of compensation!

Whatever you do: don’t do it for gold; do it for God’s glory! Don’t do it for the money; do it for God, with no ulterior motive! When you refuse to be rewarded by man, God will make sure you are rewarded in Heaven.

Prayer:

Father, help me to serve You for the right reasons. I don’t want to do anything for personal gain! I want to pour out my life to You, in Jesus’ name. I willingly forsake earthly reward, because I know my reward will be waiting for me in Heaven.
