Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.” – Matt 22:37-38
The Pharisees asked Jesus a question that is highly relevant for us today: what is the greatest commandment? Out of all the things Jesus taught, what is most important to remember? If we don’t have time to search the Scriptures day and night, what is the one thing that is most important to keep in mind?
Love God most: with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.
Love God first, and love people second. Too often, we try to do things in reverse. We know God’s command to love other people, so we try to go out and do it on our own. But if we are to love other people as we really should, we have to rely on God’s Holy Spirit. We can’t do it alone! To try and love others without encountering the love of God first is a fool’s errand; but to love others as a humble recipient of God’s boundless love is pure bliss!
Keep it simple. Love God with all your heart. The rest will follow.
Prayer:
Father, help me to love You first. You are the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last! You are my Everything!
