Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.” – Ex 18:15

This was the Old Testament ministry model: whenever one of God’s people needed to hear from God, they would have to go to Moses. Because they didn’t believe they could hear from God for themselves, the people of Israel had to rely on someone else to hear from Him and share the message. But that is never the way God intended for things to be!

God’s will has always been to speak to His people directly. It was us, not Him, who refused to have relationship:

Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” – Ex 20:18-19

God’s people turned away from God; He never turned away from them. His will has always been – and always will be – to speak to you directly!

You can hear from God. You should hear from God! If you believe in Jesus, you have access to the throne of Heaven (Heb 4:16); and that means not a single day should go by without speaking with your Father!

Prayer:

Father, thank You that I don’t need an intermediary to talk to You. Thank You for always being willing to speak to me directly: face to face, in Jesus’ name!
