Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“So rend your heart, and not your garments…” (Joel 2:13). Whenever the Israelites were in mourning, they would tear their clothes to signify their grief. Yet God notifies us through the Prophet Joel that He would much prefer it if we would rend our hearts instead of our garments. God is not interested in surface-deep displays of repentant despair; He’s interested in heart change. He doesn’t want us to simply know His law intellectually; He wants us to write it on our hearts (Deut 11:18, Heb 8:10). He no longer requires our sacrifices; He simply wants us to yield to His will (1 Sam 15:22). Let your love for God be more than surface-deep. Give Him your whole heart.

Father, I invite You to occupy my whole heart: all of who I am, and all of who I want to be! I invite Your Holy Spirit into my life. Take full control; I give it all to you!
