Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh…” – Joel 2:28
Joel prophesied that two things would lead to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit:
1) Repentance. God’s people, who had wandered far from Him, would make a decision to return to Him.
So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and He relents from doing harm. – Joel 2:13
2) Corporate Prayer. God would honor the united heart of His people.
Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders… – Joel 2:16
There is power in repentance. There is power in getting together with believers and turning our hearts towards God. We see the same principles in effect in Acts 2, at the initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit. When God’s people 1) turned from their ways and followed Jesus, and 2) gathered together in the upper room to contend for more of God, the Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh! Are you ready to exercise those same principles in your own life, and see God move like never before?
Prayer:
Father, help me to turn to You with my whole heart. Remind me of the power that is available when I get together and pray with other people. When we repent and gather to pray, the Holy Spirit moves!
