Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
…first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. – Matt 23:26
The Pharisees spent all day trying to appear righteous to the people around them. Their exterior – their appearance – was brand spanking new, and they impressed everyone who saw them. Inside, however, they were crumbling.
Sometimes we assume change happens from the outside-in. We beat ourselves up because no matter how hard we try, we still say and do the wrong things. But real change happens from the inside-out. Jesus cautioned the Pharisees to focus on the inside first. When we clean the inside first, the outside will take care of itself.
Jesus is not interested in behavior modification. He wants heart transformation. No amount of forced change in behavior will ever cause you to fall in love with Jesus Christ; but once God transforms your heart, you will be transformed into the man or woman God wants you to be from the inside out!
Prayer:
Father, help me to change my heart. I want to love You with everything I have, and seek You with all that I am! I know that if I love you with all my heart, everything else will fall into place!
