Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land? – Ps 137:4
God’s people were tired. They had been taken captive and brought to Babylon against their will. How could they possibly sing at a time like this? How could they find joy when there was suffering all around them?
Our joy is found in Jesus Christ. The joy He gives us depends on our position, not our condition. We have joy because we are Heaven-bound! If God is on our side, whom shall we fear? Nobody should be able to steal the joy we have in Jesus Christ – ever.
Your “captivity” might be literal, or it might be symbolic. Maybe you’re trapped in a dead-end job you hate. Perhaps you’re stuck in New York City and you just can’t take it any more. No matter what you’re going through, your privilege is to sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land: to experience absolute, immovable joy, no matter where you are!
Prayer:
Father, the joy I have in Your Son Jesus Christ is my strength. Help me to be joyful at all times, no matter what’s happening around me. Protect my joy, in Jesus’ name!
