Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry…” – Ex 22:23

God cares for the less fortunate. He also cares how we treat the less fortunate. The way we treat others – especially those without the means and resources we enjoy – is a reflection of the way we think God feels about them.

Here are God’s instructions concerning refugees: “You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Ex 22:21). Here are God’s instructions concerning those without a husband or a father: “You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child” (v 22). When we mistreat a widow or fatherless child, He hears; and when we mistreat a stranger, He sees!

Will you allow God’s love to shape your concept of social justice? Will you allow God’s love to so overwhelm you that your heart is moved to care for the less fortunate the same way He does?

Prayer:

Father, enlarge my heart. Move me with compassion to bless those who are less fortunate: strangers, widows, and fatherless children! I know You love them; so I should love them too, in Jesus’ name.
