Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

You shall put the mercy seat upon the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy. – Ex 26:34

God asked Moses to include two things in the Most Holy Place, which would house His very presence: the mercy seat, and the ark of the Testimony. The ark of the Testimony represented God’s standard of holiness: inside were the Ten Commandments, written on tablets of stone. God expected His people to follow His word!

The mercy seat, on the other hand, was a perpetual reminder that God is merciful. Mercy means that whenever we fall short, there is forgiveness of sin. God is perfectly holy, and perfectly merciful. Sin requires punishment; but Jesus’ death on the Cross means He took on the punishment we deserve, so we could receive the mercy of God!

The key to exercising the mercy of God is found in His presence. When we run from God, shame gets the best of us; but when we run to Him, mercy prevails! Thank God that because Jesus fulfilled the Law, we get to enjoy God’s infinite mercy, in Jesus’ name.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the perfect gift: Jesus Christ on the Cross. You made a way to exercise both Your justice and Your mercy in one infinite moment as your Son gave up His life for my sin. Thank you!
