Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’” – Matt. 25:8-9

In Matthew 25, Jesus tells a parable (i.e. a story with a purpose) of ten virgins. Five were wise, but five were foolish. All of them had received a lamp: they were all capable of burning brightly and producing light! But only some of them “took oil” (v 4). Only some of them tended the flame.

“Taking oil” represents keeping your first love – your love for Jesus! – burning strong and bright in your heart. Remember what Jesus told the disciples about the cycle of faith:

And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. – Matt. 24:12-13

You gave your life to Jesus because you love Him! But oh how easily the cares and concerns of this world smother the burning love for Jesus that you first had in your heart. As time goes on, we tend to lose our passion for Jesus. And unless you kindle it, it will go out.

Take today to do an oil change. Fill your soul up with the word of God. Talk to God “face to face” (Ex. 33:11) and hear what He has to say! Allow the Holy Spirit to remind you of the thoughts and plans He has for you (Jer. 29:11). You will be refreshed, and ready to keep the flame burning in your heart until Jesus comes again.

Prayer:

Father, I need an oil change. I was once burning and on fire for Jesus! But my love has grown cold. I pray You would make me burn with passion for Jesus again!
