CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to Me” (Matt 25:40). Take out the middle man. You’re no longer transacting with another human being; you’re transacting directly with God. Whenever we show love to someone else, we show love to God Himself. Whenever we give something tangible (food, money, clothing) to someone less fortunate, we give it to God Himself. One the one hand, this realization can induce extra responsibility, because we must make sure our gifts would honor God. On the other hand, this revelation should be incredibly freeing. We’re no longer giving to (or loving on) another human being, full of faults and unlikely to ever pay us back. We get to give to God Himself! The Bible says that when we give to the poor we lend to The Lord, and He will repay what we have given (Prov 19:17). We’re lifted out of a situation where we were never guaranteed return compensation, and up into a reality where God sees our care for others as an investment in Him!

Prayer:

“Father, thank You for the chance to give to others! Help me to give liberally, and with a glad heart, knowing that I’m really giving directly to You. Every day; all the time. In Jesus’ Mighty Name.”
