Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

The rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when you give an offering to the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves. – Ex 30:15

God commanded Moses to take a census and number the people of Israel. Every man was required to give a ransom for himself to the Lord, to atone for his sins. Every man, whether rich or poor, owed exactly the same amount.

So it is to this day. All of us have sinned and fall short of perfection (Rom 3:23). No matter what we’ve done, whether good or bad, a ransom is required to atone for our sins. We all owe exactly the same amount: our life. The wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23), and God will settle for nothing less.

But Jesus Christ has already served as our Ransom. He already paid the ultimate price so that you and I could live out our lives in freedom! Jesus was separated from God, by choice, so that you and I would never have to be. Because Jesus died on our behalf, we are free to truly enjoy our new life in Him!

Rejoice, for your ransom has already been paid; and no further payment is required.

…the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. – Matt 20:28

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the freedom I have in Your Son Jesus Christ. Thank You that He died for my sins. He died so that I might live, and now I want to live for Him!
