Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” – Ex 32:1
Moses needed time on the mountain with God. If Moses had not gone up on Mount Sinai to be alone with God, the people of Israel would have never received God’s commandments. If Moses had not gone up on Mount Sinai to be alone with God, the specific and intricate instructions God’s people needed to live according to their design would have never been properly communicated.
If you are a leader – in your church, in your family, or in any area of your life – this lesson is for you. Moses needed time alone with God; but the people all around him panicked as soon as he was gone. Moses needed time alone with God; but when the people of Israel didn’t see him, they rushed to try and fix things themselves.
You are like Moses. You need time alone with God. However, do not be surprised if you encounter resistance and sabotage. The people around you may wonder why you are enjoying personal time with God, instead of working or socializing. They may even rush to replace you, or criticize you for not being around more often.
But you need your time alone with God. It was on Mount Sinai – in God’s presence – that Moses received the instructions he needed to guide God’s people well. And it is in God’s presence that you will find the encouragement and refreshing you need to lead every day.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your presence! I know that everything I need is found in Your presence. Help me to rest and be recharged in personal times of prayer with You!
