Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Of the blue, purple, and scarlet thread they made garments of ministry, for ministering in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron, as the Lord had commanded Moses. – Ex. 39:1
Under the Old Covenant, priests had “garments of ministry.” If you wanted to get into the “holy place” (i.e. close to God), you had better be wearing the right thing! It mattered how clean you were. It mattered what you looked like. The garments represented behavior. In other words, if you wanted to get close to God you had to have your stuff together!
But under the New Covenant, you are “hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3). When God looks at you, He doesn’t see your sin! He sees His Son. He doesn’t see your filthy past anymore because it’s been washed clean by the blood of Jesus! You have been separated from your sin, “As far as the east is from the west” (Ps. 103:12). And that means that your outside appearance – what you’re wearing, and what you look like – doesn’t matter anymore. All that matters is the posture of your heart!
Come talk to God. Jesus has already paid the price of admission into the “holy place” on your behalf. Your outsides don’t matter anymore; it is what’s inside – your love for Jesus – that truly counts.
Father, thank You for separating me from my sin. Thank You for covering my past with the blood of Jesus! I am righteous and pure because You say so, in Jesus’ name.
