Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. – Ps 51:10

As David was penning this psalm, he had just been caught with Bathsheba. He was knee-deep in sin, and he knew he needed to change. But his prayer wasn’t, “God, help me to behave better!” It was, “Change my heart…renew my spirit.” David knew something that we should know: if our heart changes, our body will follow.

God is not interested in behavior modification; He is all about heart transformation. Real change doesn’t happen from the outside-in; it happens from the inside-out. If you just try to “stop sinning,” you’re not going to change; but if you ask God to give you a clean heart, sin will no longer have any hold on you!

Prayer:

Father, give me a clean heart and a steadfast spirit! Restore in me everything the enemy has tried to steal, in Jesus’ name! I want to live for You with all my heart, all my soul, and all my strength.
