Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. – Num 15:32

What would you have said if you saw this man working on a Saturday? He must be an entrepreneur! What a great work ethic! Many would heap praise on him for working while everyone else was resting; but God saw things differently.

This man was not rewarded for his persistent work ethic, working while everyone else was resting. He was permanently rebuked for being in motion when God called him to be still. He was ignorant of the Sabbath. He was forsaking – placing out of mind – God’s invitation to rest.

It is inadvisable to move when God calls us to be still. Stillness – rest – is a gift! God gives it to us for our benefit. We should not only practice it, but also appreciate it.

Prayer:

Father thank You for rest! Help me to appreciate and take advantage of the lifestyle of rest You call me to live.
