Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. Then Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified. – Num 21:23-24
Israel was in the wilderness. God had brought them up to the edge of Canaan, and sent 12 men in to spy out the Promised Land. But 10 out of 12 of those men gave a bad report, and God’s people got scared. They backed down from the promise of God, instead of seizing it. Their fear cost them: they would end up wandering around the wilderness for the next forty years.
But God have His people victory, even in the wilderness. When King Sihon and all the Amorites gathered together against Israel, God gave them victory! What’s more, He gave them, “…all of [King Sihon’s] land from the Arnon to the Jabbok” (v 24). First God gave His people victory; and then He gave them a possession!
God is the Giver of victory, even in the wilderness. Even if you feel “lost” or “out of touch” with God: He will give you victory over the enemy!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for giving me victory over my enemies, even in the wilderness! I know there is nowhere I can go that is out of reach from Your goodness; and I thank You for it, in Jesus’ name!
