CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? And how shall I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?” (Num 23:8) Balaam could not curse God’s people because God had already blessed them. Remember that in Genesis 12:3, God told Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you…”. Balaam knew that if he cursed Abraham’s descendants, he would be subjecting himself to the curses God had promised for those who cursed Abraham! It is so important that we speak only that which the Lord gives us to speak. We see later in today’s reading (Luke 1) that God caused Zacharias to be mute so he would not speak words of doubt over his own son’s life. When we speak against the Word of God, we will be made speechless at best, and cursed at worst. However, when we speak the Word of God and bless His people, we will surely be blessed!

Prayer:

“Father, help me to speak only what You give me! I don’t want to proclaim doubt, and I don’t want to hold back blessings that Your people deserve. I am blessed by the Blood of Jesus Christ so I can be a blessing to others!”
