Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. So Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road. – Num 22:23
Balaam was a seasoned prophet. He was used to hearing the voice of God! He was proficient in God’s word, and accustomed to the sound of His voice. But even Balaam was oblivious at times. God was trying to get him a message – to stop him from moving forward – but Balaam had his head down. He was so focused on doing what he wanted to do, that he lost sight of what God wanted to do!
So, God talked to someone else: Balaam’s donkey! The donkey (an animal!) saw what God was doing; but Balaam (the prophet!) completely missed it. The donkey stopped to listen to God; but Balaam was completely oblivious! Isn’t that hilarious?!
Here’s the point: God speaks to whom He wishes. He reveals His plans to those who will look and listen. Don’t ever assume you lack the education or training to see what God wants you to see. If He showed a donkey, He can certainly show you.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for speaking to the least of us. There is no such thing as being unqualified to hear Your voice. Make me attuned to Your word, in Jesus’ name!
