Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work…” – Deut 5:12-14
The Sabbath is not a suggestion; it is a command. God was reminding His people: you need to take time to rest. Do you take time every day to rest? Do you take one day out every week to refrain from work, and simply rest and think about everything God has done in your life?
Scripture is also giving us a lesson on the importance of time management. “Six days you shall labor and do all your work…” (v 13). Moses was telling God’s people to be productive and get “all [their] work” done in advance! They had to work hard for the first six days of the week, to make sure they had time to rest on the seventh. If they “didn’t have time” to rest, it meant they hadn’t been wise with the first six days!
Do you have time to rest? Evaluate your work habits. God wants you to work hard, and rest hard. Are you working productively during your time at work, so you have time to rest at home? Are you doing the important things early in the day, so you have time to rest at the end? If you want to fulfill the command to rest, you have to get the hard work out of the way first!
Prayer:
Father, help me find time to rest! Open my eyes to any work habits I need to change. If I’m procrastinating in any way, shape or form: let me know! Help me to live a lifestyle of supernatural rest, in Jesus’ name.
