Commentary from Pastor Mike White:
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” – Lk 10:17
Jesus received His authority from the Father. Then, Jesus passed His authority on to His twelve disciples:
Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2 He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick… – Lk 9:1-2
But He didn’t stop there. In yesterday’s reading, we saw Jesus pass His authority on to another seventy believers:
After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go… – Lk 10:1
In today’s reading, we see the result. Jesus sent the seventy out, and the demons were subject to them in Jesus’ name. Here is the good news: Jesus has now extended His authority to all believers:
And these signs will follow those who believe…they will cast out demons…; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” – Mk 16:17-18
Jesus extended His authority to the twelve, then to the seventy, and then to all believers: you and me! He has given us authority over, “…all the power of the enemy” (Lk 10:19). So let’s use it!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the power in the name of Jesus. I know You have given me authority over Satan, in Jesus’ name!
