Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
For the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you. – Deut. 23:14

God sent Israel into battle. But as they left, He gave them a strange instruction: “Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse” (v 13). When the soldiers of Israel went to relieve themselves, they had to cover their “tracks.” Why? Because God would walk among them, and He didn’t want to step in their stuff!

If the Lord walked into your room right now – at this very moment – would He like what He sees? If He walked into your life, what would He walk into? God does not expect perfection. Only Jesus was perfect! But if You want Him to walk with you, you have to keep it clean! Don’t do things that would push Him away if you want Him to be close.

Your responsibility is to keep it clean. Make your life a place God wants to inhabit! If you keep your life holy and blameless, He will do all the fighting on your behalf, just as He did for Israel. You don’t have to fight; you just have to clean up your camp.

Prayer:

Father, show me how to make my life inviting for You. I want more of Your presence! I want You to walk with me every day for the rest of my life. If there’s anything around me that’s preventing intimacy with You, help me to root it out, in Jesus’ name.
