Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“We have heard the pride of Moab (he is exceedingly proud), of his loftiness and arrogance and pride, and of the haughtiness of his heart.” – Jer 48:29

All the nations that were destroyed in Old Testament Scripture had something in common: they were proud. Pride is, “a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements.”[1] Pride causes us to look at what we have done, and to forget what God has done. Pride takes our focus off the Cross, and instead causes us to focus on earthly measures of success. Pride causes us to build up treasures that will not stand the test of time – money, power, and success – instead of “treasures in heaven” (Matt 16:20). Pride causes us to think we don’t need God. Pride leads to destruction.

How do we kill our pride? Ask God to remove it. You don’t have to fight pride. The Holy Spirit will deal with it for you; but you have to give Him an invitation:

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. – Ps 139:3-4

Invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart, and take out anything that doesn’t belong there. God is always willing to pull up pride by the roots; and as He does, you will experience everlasting life.

Prayer:

Father, search my heart. Pull out pride by the roots. I invite Your Holy Spirit to search me, to know my heart, and to try me: to see if there is any wicked way in me, and to change everything that needs to be changed!
