CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, “Give Me a drink,” you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water’” (Jn 4:10). Many times we think in terms of what God is asking us to do, and wonder why He asks us to do so much. Here Jesus asks a gentile woman for a drink, and she wonders why it is that such a Man would ever ask her for water. As a Jew, why would He ever recruit her, a Samaritan, as a servant? It is not our job to question God’s purpose for our lives, and the manner in which He asks us to serve. He chooses us to serve Him in such a way that suits His will. Instead of asking why God wants us to do something, we must remember that He is the Giver of life. He is the One who sent His Holy Spirit to dwell inside of us. He knows what He is doing. When we realize all God has done for us, and all He is still willing to do when we submit our lives to Him, every act of partnership will seem miniscule compared to the Cross.

Prayer:

Father, help me to change my perspective! You have done so much for me, even though I didn’t deserve it. Help me to serve You freely and with gladness, because You have already done everything for me.
