Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” – 1 Sam 15:22

The best gift you can ever give God is obedience: a willingness to say yes to His word and His will for your life, no matter what!

Saul had done some of what God asked Him to do. God sent Saul on a mission to kill the Amalekites: to “utterly destroy all that they have” (v 3). Saul killed all the people; but he saved the best plunder. His plan was to sacrifice it to God, instead of destroying it like God asked.

This seems like a noble intention; but God was not pleased. God didn’t want the best plunder as a sacrifice; He wanted Saul’s heart. And because Saul was unwilling to obey the word of the Lord, the sacrifice he offered to God was utterly worthless.

God wants your heart! Before you give Him anything else, give Him your heart. Perfect obedience is a heart fully yielded to God; and that is the best gift God can ever receive.

Prayer:

Father, I give my heart to you! Thank You for trusting me to be obedient. I ask that Your Holy Spirit would fill me with faith to do everything You’re calling me to do, in Jesus’ name!
