Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God… – Acts 7:55

An angry mob wanted to kill Stephen for boldly preaching the Gospel. They “gnashed at him with their teeth” (v. 54). They, “…ran at him with one accord; and they cast him out of the city and stoned him” (vv. 57-58). This aggressive crowd agreed on one thing: Stephen had to die!

But Stephen wasn’t panicked. In fact, he wasn’t even focused on what was going on. He was so in love with Jesus that nothing else concerned him. He, “…gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God” (v. 55).

I pray that you would become so enamored with Jesus that even in the midst of absolute panic – at life’s most threatening and critical moments – all you would see is Jesus. I pray the glory of God would consume your focus in such a way that even when everything is going wrong around you, all you can see is your Savior!

Perfect peace – even in the midst of certain death! – comes when you fix your eyes on Jesus, and refuse to focus on anything and anyone but Him.

Prayer:

Father, I pray You would give me perfect peace. Help me to fix my eyes on Jesus, even when it seems illogical! Help me to be obsessed with Heaven, even when it seems impractical. Your glory is all I want to see, in Jesus’ name!
